Joe Root had single-handedly propelled England’s score in the first session with some unconventional shots, leaving the Australian team scratching their heads. Pietersen praised Root’s performance, acknowledging his dominance and impact on the game. However, Ponting patiently waited for Pietersen to finish before delivering a brutal response, saying, “Well, he’s out now, he got 40.”

Australia’s bowling effort proved effective as they eventually bowled out England for 273 runs, with Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon taking four wickets each. Australia began their chase with a promising 61-run opening stand between Usman Khawaja and David Warner.
