The countdown to the IPL 2024 auction is on, and all eyes are on the franchises as they strategize to snatch the hottest cricketing talent. But at the Delhi Capitals camp, a surprising twist awaits. Joining the usual squad will be a familiar face in a brand new role: captain Rishabh Pant himself.

For the first time in IPL history, a player will wield a different kind of power at the auction table. This move by the Delhi Capitals signifies not just Pant’s leadership skills, but also his burgeoning interest in the business side of the game.

“You know as a kid I used to think like one day I might be able to sit on the table somehow to help a team or something like that,” shared Rishabh Pant, his excitement palpable. “I never thought that I would make it happen, but somehow things are in place and I’m able to do it, lucky to be able to do it.”

However, the pressure of this unprecedented responsibility isn’t lost on the star cricketer. “Nervousness is definitely one point which I have to work on,” he admitted. “Whenever you do something exciting or something new, the nervousness is always there.”

Yet, the thrill of learning and contributing in a unique way outweighs the apprehension. “This is the first time, but like I want to grow as an individual and learn whatever I can from it,” said Pant, his voice tinged with determination. “Really exciting because I don’t know if many people have done it or not. But I would love to be part of it.”

This participation also marks a significant step in Pant’s personal journey back to the field. After a career-altering accident in December 2022, his return to competitive cricket has been eagerly awaited.

“I think I would love to see people around because it’s been a while since I have been around people a lot, something I have missed a lot,” he confessed, speaking of the isolation involved in his extensive rehab. With this unique opportunity, Pant aims to contribute beyond just his batting prowess. “I would love to help the Delhi Capitals side as best possible to get the best players at the best possible price,” he asserted, brimming with captainly responsibility.

As the gavel falls on December 19th, cricket fans will witness not just the usual bidding frenzy, but also the birth of a new chapter in IPL history. Rishabh Pant’s foray into the auction room promises to be both nerve-wracking and insightful, adding another layer of intrigue to the already electrifying spectacle.
