Rishabh Pant has faced significant criticism during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for taking excessive risks, which have yielded inconsistent scores of 37, 1, 21, 28, 9, 28, and 30. Both external observers and voices within the Indian camp have pointed out that Pant often struggles to curb his natural attacking instincts when the situation demands restraint.

However, his gritty performance in Sydney stood out as he adapted his approach to counter Australia’s disciplined bowling on a pitch with seam movement and bounce. Taking numerous body blows, Pant played a measured knock, facing 98 balls and hitting just four boundaries. Coming in at a critical juncture with India at 57 for 2 after 25 overs, Pant steadied the innings until tea, taking the team to 107 for 4 after 50 overs.

Reflecting on his approach, Rishabh Pant said, “In this innings, I wasn’t in a frame of mind to take charge of the game because the wicket was doing too much. Given the situation, I felt I needed to play defensively. There’s a time to attack, but it has to come naturally. I try to respond to what the game demands on that day.”

Following India’s defeat in Melbourne, head coach Gautam Gambhir emphasized the importance of a team-first mindset. Players were urged to evaluate whether their natural style benefited the team. Rohit Sharma, four days earlier, had tasked Pant with finding a balance between his instincts and the team’s needs.

“Yes, it’s challenging when you see a hittable ball but need to play sensibly,” Rishabh Pant admitted. “The SCG wicket required secure cricket because losing one wicket could lead to a collapse. I’m learning to balance aggression with situational demands.”

Despite adjustments, Rishabh Pant remains committed to his natural game. “There’s no one way to play cricket, but you must evolve. I’m working on finding the balance between aggression and caution while staying true to my style. Overthinking can make things worse, so I focus on giving my 200%.” Jasprit Bumrah, standing in for Rohit Sharma as captain, shared a clear message: “Be positive and focus on the present. Move the game forward every day.” Pant echoed this sentiment, praising Bumrah’s leadership in maintaining morale.

India also faced frustration with a DRS call when Washington Sundar was given out caught behind after a faint Snickometer murmur was deemed conclusive by umpire Joel Wilson. Reflecting on the decision, Pant said, “Technology is crucial, but decisions should stay with the on-field umpire unless there’s undeniable evidence. We need improvements in consistency.”
