Rishabh Pant produced another trademark moment of brilliance on Day 2 of the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo, smashing a massive six off Lahiru Kumara after returning to the crease following a wrist injury scare. Pant had retired hurt on three on the opening day after a sharp short delivery from Kumara struck his left wrist. However, the Indian wicketkeeper-batter showed no signs of hesitation when he resumed his innings on Sunday.

Kumara immediately tested Pant with another short delivery. The left-hander responded emphatically, swivelling across and pulling the ball over fine leg for a huge maximum. The shot was struck with such power that it hit the roof of the Colombo stadium and sailed out of the ground.

The extraordinary hit forced the fourth umpire to bring out a fresh box of cricket balls, underlining just how far Rishabh Pant had sent the delivery. Pant entered the second Test in strong form after playing a crucial role in India’s 165-run victory over Sri Lanka in Galle. He scored 39 in the first innings before producing a valuable 66 off just 69 balls in the second innings.

India had ended Day 1 of the Colombo Test on 300/5 after an eventful opening day. However, Asitha Fernando struck early on Day 2 to dismiss Saransh Jain and reduce India to 307/6, bringing Pant back into the middle.

With the match still finely balanced, Pant once again adopted his aggressive approach and put Sri Lanka under pressure. His attacking intent helped India build an important partnership with Dhruv Jurel.

Pant and Jurel added 80 runs for the seventh wicket, with both batters reaching 45 as India moved to 387/6 shortly before lunch.

The innings also saw Pant achieve a significant statistical milestone. With his latest contribution, he surpassed former India captain MS Dhoni’s tally of 2,496 Test runs outside India, becoming India’s highest run-scorer as a wicketkeeper in Test cricket away from home.
