Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has ensured he will be in the top six when the ICC Test rankings are updated on 26 January, overhauling former India captain Virat Kohli in the process. Pant’s last four Tests have confirmed to be something of a revelation, and once again it was his counter-attacking 99 in the second innings of the opening Test against New Zealand which was the line-up for his three-spot rise.

Virat Kohli, meanwhile, slipped one rung to eighth after scoring a fluent 70 in Bengaluru. Yashasvi Jaiswal remained India’s highest-ranked batter and, like the previous ranking, is in fourth position. However, India skipper Rohit Sharma slipped down two places to share the 15th position with Sri Lanka’s Dimuth Karunaratne.

At the top, England’s Joe Root continued to remain at the summit with a pretty sizeable distance. Ben Duckett of England moved to within one ranking from the top 10 after his century against Pakistan moved him up three places to 11th. Salman Ali Agha of Pakistan reached his best ranking of 14th after scores of 31 and 63 in the same series.

New Zealand had a few notables, with Rachin Ravindra surging 36 places to 18th and Devon Conway advancing by 12 slots to 36th. Among the bowlers, Matt Henry found himself within the top 10 following an eight-wicket haul for New Zealand in their eight-wicket win over India.

Not far behind was his teammate Will O’Rourke at 39th after his seven wickets in the same game. Pakistan spinner Noman Ali jumped 17 spots to 17th among the bowlers after his 11-wicket haul against England, while Sajid Khan leapt 22 spots to 50th following his Player of the Match performance in the same game.

India’s bowlers did not suffer any movement apart from these moves. Jasprit Bumrah tops the chart, followed by R Ashwin at the second position, with Ravindra Jadeja at the seventh position to complete a good set of performances by Indians in the top 10.
