Team India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant narrowly avoided a run-out disaster during the second innings of the first Test against New Zealand, following a confusing mix-up with Sarfaraz Khan. The incident unfolded on Day 4 at the M. New Zealand had taken control of the game with a commanding first-innings total of 402 runs, following India’s disappointing collapse for just 46 runs. Rachin Ravindra’s magnificent knock of 134 runs off 157 balls, laced with 13 boundaries and four sixes, set the tone for the Black Caps’ dominance. With India struggling to mount a comeback, every run in the second innings became crucial.

The mix-up occurred during the first ball of the 56th over, with Matt Henry delivering a sharp ball that Sarfaraz Khan managed to cut towards deep backward point. The pair easily completed the first run, but Rishabh Pant, eager to capitalize, attempted to push for a second run.

However, Sarfaraz Khan, realizing the danger, stayed at the non-striker’s end and frantically tried to warn Pant. He waved his arms, yelled, and even jumped to grab Pant’s attention, but the wicketkeeper-batter was already halfway down the pitch.

Despite the miscommunication, Pant was fortunate to escape. Devon Conway’s throw from the boundary was off-target, and wicketkeeper Tom Blundell was out of position to effect the run-out. It was a tense moment for India, but ultimately, Pant survived to continue his innings, much to the relief of his teammates and the crowd. This close call highlighted India’s pressure as they fought to stay alive in the match.
