All the pre-match speculation around Lucknow Super Giants’ No. 3 batter in IPL 2026 was put to rest rather unexpectedly, as captain Rishabh Pant pulled off a tactical surprise against the Delhi Capitals at the Ekana Stadium. Instead of sticking to his familiar middle-order role, Pant promoted himself to open the innings — only the second time he has done so in his IPL career.

The move immediately caught attention, hinting at a strategic shift aimed at exploiting match-ups and setting an aggressive tone in the powerplay. It also allowed Aiden Markram to slide down the order, giving the batting lineup more flexibility.

However, what looked like a bold and calculated gamble ended in pure misfortune. On the final delivery of the second over, Mitchell Marsh drilled a firm straight drive off Mukesh Kumar. The ball appeared to be heading for a routine return catch, but in a bizarre twist, it clipped the bowler’s fingertips and ricocheted onto the stumps at the non-striker’s end.

Pant, caught well outside his crease, had no chance of making it back. The dismissal left players and commentators stunned. It was the kind of freak moment that sums up cricket’s unpredictability — a perfectly timed shot turning into an unfortunate run-out in a split second. Pant walked back after scoring just 7 off 9 balls, visibly disappointed but aware of the sheer bad luck involved.
Despite the early setback, Pant’s move wasn’t entirely out of the blue. Over the course of his T20 career, he has opened the innings 23 times, scoring 672 runs at an impressive strike rate of 159, including a century and five fifties. He had also experimented with the role during India’s 2022 series against England and briefly in IPL 2025.

The decision to open on Wednesday reflects LSG’s willingness to think outside the box and experiment with their combinations early in the season. Whether Pant continues at the top remains to be seen, but the move certainly highlighted the team’s flexible approach and intent to maximise their batting resources in IPL 2026.
