Rajasthan Royals have named Riyan Parag as their interim captain for the first three matches of IPL 2025, following an official announcement on March 20. The decision was made due to a finger injury sustained by regular skipper Sanju Samson, who is expected to play purely as a batter until he receives medical clearance to resume wicketkeeping and fielding duties. Once fully fit, Samson will reclaim the captaincy.

In a video shared on the Rajasthan Royals’ official Instagram account, Sanju Samson addressed the situation, expressing confidence in Parag’s ability to lead. “I’m not completely fit for three or more games,” Samson admitted. “But I believe we have strong leaders in this group who’ve maintained a great environment over the years. For these three games, Riyan will be leading. He’s more than capable, and I expect everyone to back him and support him.”
Samson, who joined the Royals’ camp on Monday, underwent finger surgery last month and has been rehabilitating at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. Until he recovers fully, he is likely to feature as an Impact Player, with Dhruv Jurel expected to take over wicketkeeping duties.

Dhru Jurel had already stepped in for Samson during the fifth T20I against England in February, following a blow to Samson’s finger by a sharp Jofra Archer delivery.

For Riyan Parag, this opportunity marks a significant moment. The 23-year-old has been part of the Royals since 2019 and had a stellar IPL 2024 season, amassing 573 runs at an average of 52.09 with a strike rate of nearly 150 (149.21). His remarkable performance led to his T20I and ODI debut for India, further solidifying his growth as a player.

In a statement, the franchise expressed its belief in Parag’s leadership qualities: “Rajasthan Royals’ decision to hand Riyan the captaincy underscores the franchise’s confidence in his leadership, a skill he has demonstrated through his tenure as Assam’s domestic captain. His familiarity with the team’s dynamics makes him well-equipped to step into this role.”
Rajasthan Royals will kick off their IPL 2025 campaign against Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 23, followed by home matches against defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders on March 26 and five-time champions Chennai Super Kings on March 30.
