Robin Uthappa has drawn a fascinating comparison between the emerging cricket talents Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal and the legendary opening duo of Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar. The Ganguly-Tendulkar partnership is heralded as the most successful opening pair in the history of ODI cricket, amassing a staggering 6609 runs in 136 innings. Their impressive average of 49.32 includes 21 century partnerships and 23 half-century stands, setting a high benchmark for opening pairs in cricket.

Although Shubman and Yashasvi have yet to open together in ODIs—since Yashasvi has so far only featured in Tests and T20Is for India—they have shown promising chemistry in T20 cricket. The duo has already recorded two half-century and two century stands in just 10 innings in the shortest format, hinting at a potentially prolific partnership.

Robin Uthappa, who had the privilege of playing alongside Sourav and Sachin during his international career, sees a similar dynamic in Shubman and Yashasvi. He believes the young duo’s complementary styles mirror the legendary partnership of the former Indian captains.

“When I look at Shubman and Yashasvi, they remind me of Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar going out to bat together,” Robin Uthappa said on the Sony Sports Network. “Their games and strategies complement each other, which is evident when they play together.”

Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has played nine Tests and 23 T20Is, has already made a significant impact with 1,028 runs in Tests and 723 runs in T20Is, averaging 68.53 and 36.15 respectively. The Mumbai batter’s impressive tally includes four centuries and nine half-centuries across both formats. Uthappa is confident that Yashasvi will quickly establish himself in the ODI team when given the chance, citing his adaptability and skill.

“I honestly feel that when Yashasvi gets his opportunity in ODI cricket, he will secure his spot very quickly. After experiencing Test and T20I cricket, he will find ODI cricket much easier because he will feel like he has all the time in the world to score runs,” Robin Uthappa explained.

This endorsement from Uthappa adds to the growing anticipation around the potential of Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal as a formidable opening pair for India, evoking memories of one of cricket’s most iconic partnerships.
