The veteran Indian batsman, Robin Uthappa has been traded to the three-time champions, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ahead of the 2021 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Rohin Uthappa made the move in an all-cash deal as informed by his previous franchise, Rajasthan Royals (RR).
Tweeting about Uthappa’s arrival, on Thursday, CSK tweeted, “Robin is our newest Bat-Man! Welcoming you with #Yellove Vanakkam.” Uthappa had joined the Royals ahead of the 2020 season and he was featured in tye playing XI for 12 games in the 13th edition. He managed to score 196 runs in what was a disappointing campaign for them, as he failed to score a singke a highest score of 41.

However, talking about his union with CSK, Robin Uthappa said, “I really enjoyed my year at the Royals and had a great time being a part of this franchise. I am now excited for the next part of my cricketing journey joining CSK for IPL 2021.”

CSK’s acquisition of Uthappa was an expected one as they’ve lost two openers: Shane Watson, who retired after the 2020 season, and Murali Vijay, who was released. They do, however, have Faf du Plessis, Ambati Rayudu, Ruturaj Gaikwad, N. Jagadeesan, and Sam Curran whi has the capabilities of openiing the innings.

Royals CEO Jake Lush McCrum said, “We’d like to thank Robbie for his contribution during his time with us. He provided significant value building into the season in our camps in Guwahati and Nagpur, and his speech during our World Cup winners session during the season was one of the most powerful we have heard.”
He further added, “We do have depth with regards to openers in our squad, therefore when the offer came from CSK, we thought it was a good opportunity for all parties involved. We’d like to wish Robbie all the best for this season at CSK and his future beyond that.”

On Wednesday, the Royals revealed that they have released Steve Smith, who led the team in the last two seasons. Sanju Samson will be leading the squad for the upcoming season.
