The veteran Indian cricketer, Robin Uthappa has said he would want to see Jasprit Bumrah becoming the captain of the Indian Test team after the end of Rohit Sharma’s tenure as skipper, saying the fast bowler has a great cricketing mind. Uthappa said Bumrah was his first and only pick for captaincy in Tests for the future. Speaking on ShareChat’s Audio Chatroom session, Robin Uthappa said it’s important to give opportunities to Bumrah to become the Test captain team so that he gets better with experience.

Jasprit Bumrah became the 2nd fast bowler after Kapil Dev to lead India in Tests when he was appointed lead to the team during the rescheduled 5th Test against England in Birmingham in July. Bumrah led India in the absence of Rohit Sharma, who tested positive for Covid-19 days ahead of the series finale.

Talking about Bumrah, Robin Uthappa said, “For Test cricket, for me, is Jasprit Bumrah. Boomy is easily the top pick for me in Tests. He has got a great cricketing mind. With the way he bowls, you know he has got a great cricketing mind. It’s just about giving him time at the top. With experience, he will get better and better.”

Furthermore, Robin Uthappa said he would pick either Rishabh Pant or KL Rahul for the white-ball captaincy role and would also have Shreyas Iyer and Hardik Pandya in the mix. While Rahul has been in the leadership group for quite some time, Pant led India for the first time during the 5-match T20I series against South Africa at home after IPL 2022.

Robin Uthappa concluded, “For one-day and T20 cricket, for me, the choices will be between KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant for sure. I would have 2 captains and I think you can throw Shreyas Iyer into that mix. “There is Hardik as well but I think, given longevity, you would like to give someone who can lead the side for a long period of time than someone who could lead for 3-4 years. You would like someone with an 8 to 10-year horizon. If you are looking at that view, it would be KL and Pant.”
