Rohit Sharma’s sudden removal as Mumbai Indians (MI) captain ahead of the 2024 IPL season sparked widespread discontent, and even a year later, emotions among fans remain raw. Despite Hardik Pandya taking over the reins, many supporters continue to rally behind Rohit, hoping to see the five-time title-winning skipper reinstated.

At a recent event, one such fan passionately pleaded with MI owner Nita Ambani to bring Rohit back as captain. The fan, with folded hands, repeatedly said, “Rohit ko captain karo, madam,” to which Nita responded with a gentle nod and a folded hands gesture—an interaction that quickly went viral.

While Rohit continues to lead India in ODIs and Tests, his role in IPL 2025 has been limited to that of a specialist batter for MI. Unfortunately, the 37-year-old has struggled to make a mark this season, scoring just 56 runs in five innings at an average of 11.20. He’s mostly featured as an Impact Player, coming into play only when MI bat.

The transition to Hardik’s leadership wasn’t smooth. His appointment was met with criticism and backlash, especially after MI’s dismal finish at the bottom of the table in 2024. Hardik was repeatedly booed, including at MI’s fortress, Wankhede Stadium.
However, his key role in India’s victorious T20 World Cup 2024 campaign earned him redemption among fans. Still, the results this season have been far from convincing. MI have only managed two wins from six games so far.

However, their recent win over the unbeaten Delhi Capitals on April 13 could serve as a morale booster. With the season still open, the franchise—and its fanbase—will hope for a turnaround, whether through performance, leadership, or both.
