India maintained their unbeaten streak in the T20 World Cup 2024 with a commanding 47-run victory over Afghanistan in Barbados on Thursday. Suryakumar Yadav’s resilient half-century on a challenging pitch, complemented by the bowling prowess of Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav, propelled India to a successful start in the Super 8 stage.
Opting to bat first, India set a formidable target of 181/8, powered by Suryakumar’s explosive fifty and a dynamic cameo from vice-captain Hardik Pandya. In response, Afghanistan struggled throughout their innings, managing only 134 all out in 20 overs.
Reflecting on the match at the post-match presentation, Indian captain Rohit Sharma credited his team’s familiarity with Caribbean conditions from previous bilateral series, which aided their strategy against Afghanistan.

“Having played T20 games here over the last two years, we were able to plan effectively. We adapted well to the conditions provided. We have full confidence in our bowling unit to defend such totals,” Rohit Sharma remarked.
Rohit Sharma specifically lauded Jasprit Bumrah, who emerged as the standout performer with figures of 3 for 7 in 4 overs. He emphasized Bumrah’s reliability and ability to shoulder responsibility in crucial moments.
“We know what Bumrah brings to the table. He’s a key player for us, and he consistently steps up. He’s always willing to take charge wherever he plays,” Rohit Sharma added.
India made a strategic change in their playing XI, opting to include Kuldeep Yadav in place of Mohammed Siraj for the match. Rohit Sharma justified this decision based on the specific conditions prevalent in Barbados.

“We assessed the conditions well. Considering the opposition, we felt having three spinners was advantageous, so we made that tactical adjustment. Looking ahead, we are open to playing three seamers if the situation demands,” Rohit Sharma concluded.
India’s comprehensive victory sets a positive tone for their Super 8 campaign, showcasing their depth in both batting and bowling departments as they aim for further success in the tournament.
