T Dilip is all set to continue as the fielding coach of the Indian men’s cricket team, just weeks after being let go by the BCCI. Initially shown the door alongside batting coach Abhishek Nayar, Dilip has now been handed a one-year extension and will rejoin the squad for the upcoming five-match Test series against England, starting June 20.

According to a report by Cricbuzz, it was senior pro Rohit Sharma who played a decisive role in getting Dilip reinstated. Despite announcing his Test retirement earlier this month, Rohit personally reached out to new head coach Gautam Gambhir, strongly recommending Dilip’s reappointment. The BCCI, which was exploring foreign candidates for the role, struggled to finalise a replacement in time and eventually leaned on Rohit’s suggestion.

“Dilip has done a fine job over the past three years and has a strong rapport with the players,” a source told PTI. “At this stage, bringing in someone new didn’t make sense—especially ahead of a high-stakes tour like England.”

Dilip’s popularity with players and his innovative ideas, such as the “fielding medal” awarded after each match, made him a standout support staff member during his earlier tenure. His familiarity with the team setup and understanding of player dynamics proved too valuable to overlook.

The five-Test series will mark the start of India’s campaign in the next ICC World Test Championship cycle. With a new-look leadership under Shubman Gill as captain and Rishabh Pant as vice-captain, the team is undergoing a transitional phase. Ahead of the main series, India A is also scheduled to play two unofficial Tests starting May 30, offering a preview of upcoming talent.

Dilip’s return is expected to add a layer of continuity and experience to a team preparing for a challenging English summer.
