The Indian skipper, Rohit Sharma, has finally addressed his decision to “opt to rest” from the pivotal fifth and final India vs. Australia Test in Sydney, shedding light on the reasoning behind the move. Speaking to Star Sports during lunch on Day 2, he revealed that the decision wasn’t impulsive but the result of prolonged introspection.

Explainining the decision, Rohit Sharma candidly revealed, “I stood down; that’s what I would say. The chat with the coach and selector was straightforward. I wasn’t scoring runs, and I wasn’t in form. This is a crucial match, and we needed a win. Carrying out-of-form players wasn’t an option. They supported my decision, which was tough for me to make.”

He added, “This thought process had been ongoing. The decision was made after arriving here. After Melbourne and New Year’s Day, I didn’t immediately tell the coach or selectors. I kept trying to regain form but couldn’t, and stepping aside felt necessary for the team.”

Rohit Sharma was quick to clarify that this move should not be mistaken for retirement. “This is not a retirement decision. I am not stepping away from the game. Right now, I am out because I am not scoring. There’s no guarantee that five months from now I won’t perform. Life changes daily, and I believe in myself,” he stated, reaffirming his commitment to the game.

Acknowledging the need for self-awareness, Rohit emphasized, “I have played this game for so long. No one from outside can decide when I should step away, sit out, or lead. I’m sensible, mature, and a father of two. I know what I want in life.”

When the anchor concluded with, “It’s been a pleasure having you as India’s captain,” Rohit responded with a confident smile: “Arre, kahin ja nahi raha hu main (I’m not going anywhere).” His remarks underscored not only his dedication to cricket but also his determination to return stronger.
