Rohit Sharma has refused to look too far ahead when asked about his chances of featuring in the 2027 ODI World Cup. With the former India captain now playing only the 50-over format, speculation has continued over whether he will be part of India’s squad for the tournament, which will be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
Speaking at the Global Fintech Fest, Rohit Sharma played down the discussions surrounding his future and suggested that there is still plenty of time before the World Cup. “October 2027 is far away, we will see about it then,” Rohit said when an audience member asked about his participation.
Rohit retired from T20I cricket on June 29, 2024, shortly after leading India to the T20 World Cup title. He subsequently announced his retirement from Test cricket on May 7, 2025, ahead of India’s tour of England. The 37-year-old now remains available only for ODIs.

His ODI future has become a regular topic of discussion since the selection committee removed him as captain and handed the leadership role to Shubman Gill. The move was reportedly part of India’s broader plan to provide opportunities to younger players and build a team for the future.
Rohit Sharma was asked about his participation in 2027 WC at an event to which he replied that “Oct 2027 is still far away, we will see about it then.”

However, Rohit’s recent performances have strengthened his case for continued selection. The veteran batter scored a century in his most recent ODI appearance against England, giving the selectors another reason to consider him for the upcoming assignments.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has also dismissed speculation over Rohit’s future, pointing towards his consistent performances. “He is playing superbly in all matches. So what more do you want? In the last match (against England), he scored 138 runs, so why is there speculation? I do not want to give some fodder for the speculators,” Saikia said following a BCCI review meeting.

Rohit’s ODI legacy includes leading India to the 2023 World Cup final, where his aggressive approach at the top helped reshape the team’s batting philosophy. That attacking template continued during India’s successful 2024 T20 World Cup campaign.
With the 2027 World Cup still more than a year away, Rohit appears unwilling to make any commitments about his international future. For now, his performances in ODIs are likely to remain the biggest factor in determining whether he gets another World Cup opportunity.
