The Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 has reached an exciting juncture with three Tests completed. India triumphed in the series opener in Perth, Australia levelled the series in Adelaide, and the third Test in Brisbane concluded in a weather-affected draw. Amidst the gripping cricketing action, one notable absence continues to spark discussions: Mohammed Shami. The Indian pace spearhead has been missing in action since the ODI World Cup 2023 final, and his unavailability has left a void in India’s bowling attack.

Shami recently returned to domestic cricket and showcased impressive form, raising hopes for his comeback. However, his participation in international matches hinges on clearance from the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (COE), previously known as the National Cricket Academy (NCA), in Bengaluru. Reports suggest Shami might join the Indian squad for the upcoming Boxing Day Test in Melbourne, but no official confirmation has been provided yet.

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma addressed the speculation during a press conference at the Gabba, expressing his frustration over the lack of clarity from the NCA. “I think it’s high time somebody from the NCA talked about him. That’s our national cricket academy where he is rehabilitating. Those guys need to come up and give us some kind of update,” Rohit said.

The captain also emphasized the importance of ensuring Shami’s fitness before any decision is made. “I understand he’s been playing a lot of cricket back home, but there have been complaints about his knee. The last thing we want is for him to come here and then pull out mid-game. That kind of situation can disrupt the entire team dynamic,” Rohit added.

Rohit Sharma further clarified that the team is unwilling to take risks unless they are entirely confident in Shami’s readiness. “There’s no way we’re taking chances unless we are 200 percent sure. If the NCA feels he’s fully recovered and fit to play, the door is open. I’ll be happy to have him in the squad,” he concluded.

As the series remains locked at 1-1, Shami’s potential return could be a game-changer for India. Fans eagerly await updates from the NCA, hoping the star pacer will be ready to bolster India’s attack in the high-stakes Boxing Day Test.
