KL Rahul’s strong performance in the first Test of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy led to a key decision from India’s captain, Rohit Sharma. After opening alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rohit decided not to disrupt the pair and accepted a demotion in the batting order for the Adelaide and Brisbane Tests.

However, despite the shift, Rohit’s performance has been lacklustre, managing only 19 runs from three innings so far in the series, while batting in the middle order. Rohit Sharma, who has been India’s regular opener, was replaced in the first Test due to personal reasons, allowing Rahul to impress. Rahul seized the moment, scoring a solid 77 in the opening match, which India won by 295 runs.

Yashasvi Jaiswal also made his mark, scoring a century in his first Test on Australian soil. Rahul continued his strong run with 84 in the Brisbane Test, contributing despite India’s batting collapse. Meanwhile, Rohit’s form has been underwhelming since his demotion. With scores of 10, 3, and 6 in his last three innings, the India captain has faced criticism for his inability to find his rhythm in the middle order.

This raises questions about whether Rohit Sharma will return to the opening slot in the upcoming Melbourne Test in a bid to regain his form. When asked about his batting position, Rohit remained tight-lipped, stressing that the team would decide internally based on what gives them the best chance of success.

“We will figure out who bats where among ourselves. It’s not something that I should discuss at every press conference,” said Rohit Sharma, adding that the focus is on maximizing the team’s chances of winning.

Additionally, Rohit reassured fans about his fitness after a knee injury sustained during Monday’s practice session. “My knee is fine,” he confirmed. The fourth Test of the series is set to begin on December 26 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
