Indian captain Rohit Sharma has addressed rumours of a rift with head coach Gautam Gambhir, assuring that all is well behind the scenes of the Indian men’s dressing room. Speaking at a press conference in Mumbai on January 18, Rohit emphasized the mutual trust he shares with Gambhir, dismissing media reports suggesting friction between the two.

Rohit highlighted the clear understanding they have about their roles, particularly on the field. “Both of us are very clear about what we want to do. I’m not going to discuss every tactical decision, but once we take the field, Gambhir fully trusts the captain’s decisions. That’s how it should be,” Rohit Sharma said during the event where chief selector Ajit Agarkar announced India’s squad for the 2025 Champions Trophy.

He further explained that discussions with Gambhir are primarily off-field. “The basic conversations happen off the field or in the dressing room. Once we are on the ground, it’s all about what I do as the captain. That’s the kind of trust we have in each other,” Rohit added.

Speculation about a rift between Rohit and Gambhir arose after India lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 to Australia 3-1. Reports claimed disagreements on team selection and strategy, particularly after Rohit dropped himself from the final Test citing personal form.
The BCCI has consistently denied these allegations. Vice-president Rajiv Shukla recently called the rumors baseless. “There is no rift between the chairman of selectors, coach, and captain. This is all rubbish being spread by a section of the media,” Shukla clarified.

Despite their struggles in Tests, where India has lost six of their last 10 matches, Rohit and Gambhir will look to turn things around in the upcoming three-match ODI series against England and the Champions Trophy in the UAE. With both tournaments offering high stakes, the team will hope that the captain-coach duo can bring out the best in each other and steer India back to winning ways.
