In a high-stakes IPL 2025 clash at the Wankhede Stadium on May 21, veteran opener Rohit Sharma found himself in the spotlight—this time for the wrong reasons. During Delhi Capitals’ chase of 181, Rohit dropped a straightforward catch off Vipraj Nigam, giving the Delhi batter a lifeline that could’ve proven costly for the Mumbai Indians.

Delhi’s innings got off to a disastrous start, crumbling to 27/3 inside five overs. Deepak Chahar struck early by removing stand-in skipper Faf du Plessis for just 6, while Trent Boult followed it up with the wicket of KL Rahul for 11. Will Jacks then joined the party, dismissing Abishek Porel to tighten Mumbai’s grip on the match.

Trying to counter the collapse, Delhi promoted all-rounder Vipraj Nigam up the order. And the move initially paid off. In just his first over at the crease, Nigam took the attack to Jacks, hammering a six and two boundaries to shift some pressure back on MI.

However, on the final ball of the sixth over, MI had a golden chance to send him back. Vipraj sliced a Mitchell Santner delivery straight to Rohit Sharma at short third man—a regulation catch by any standard. But in a rare lapse, Rohit spilt the opportunity, leaving the bowler and fans stunned.

Fortunately for Mumbai, Rohit’s drop didn’t come back to haunt them. Santner returned in the eighth over and made amends for himself, dismissing Nigam for 20 off 11. The Capitals were left reeling at 55/4 after eight overs.

Earlier, Mumbai Indians recovered from a shaky start of 58/3 to post a strong 180/5, thanks largely to a brilliant unbeaten 73 off 43 balls from Suryakumar Yadav, ably supported by a late cameo from Naman Dhir.
