Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has expressed mixed emotions, including frustration, over Rishabh Pant’s repeated dismissals in the ongoing 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Speaking on Monday, Rohit admitted it’s challenging to address Pant’s aggressive playing style, as it has been both a strength and a source of frustration for the team.

Pant was one of only two Indian batters to reach double digits in the final innings of the Melbourne Test. After another top-order collapse, Pant and opener Yashasvi Jaiswal provided some hope by holding their ground through the second session of Day 5. However, just after Tea, Pant misjudged an innocuous delivery from part-timer Travis Head, attempting an ill-timed pull shot that found the deep fielder.

His dismissal for 30 off 104 balls, where he curbed his natural boundary-hitting instincts for most of his innings, triggered a dramatic collapse. India lost their last six wickets for a mere 34 runs, handing Australia a commanding victory.

“He needs to understand what is required of himself rather than anyone telling him,” Rohit Sharma said during the post-match press conference. “In the past, he has given us a lot of success. As a captain, there’s a mixed reaction. We back him when it comes off, but when it doesn’t, it’s frustrating. There has to be a balance. It’s hard to have this conversation when his method has worked so well before. It’s about assessing the risk in each situation.”

Rohit Sharma also emphasized his long-standing relationship with Pant, saying, “I’ve known Rishabh for a long time and understand his cricket. He knows what the team needs from him. There’s a fine line between guiding him and letting him play his natural game.”

While Pant has struggled in this series, a new hero has emerged for India in Nitish Kumar Reddy. The young batter scored India’s only century in the first innings, showcasing immense potential.

“We saw a lot of potential in him,” Rohit Sharma said about Reddy. “He read the situation well, has a solid technique, and possesses a strong character. It’s early days, but he has all the tools to succeed and will only get better from here.”
