India’s vice-captain in limited-overs cricket, Rohit Sharma on Thursday recalled India’s emphatic win over Australia in the 2007 T20 World Cup semi-final and how fans celebrated in the team hotel after the victory. Rohit further highlighted the importance of fans during a cricket match, saying many times the support from the stands often helps the players in lifting their game on the field.
Cricket like all other sports has been halted due to the coronavirus pandemic and there is no update regarding the next series of the Indian team but Rohit reckons that the crowd factor is a huge element in a live cricket match.
During a chat with Star Sports, Rohit said, “You never realize you’re playing for the Indian cricket team until you witness the support of the fans.”

In the semi-final match vs Australia, Yuvraj Singh unleashed an assault on the Australian bowlers, powering India to victory in the semi-final of the T20 World Cup. Yuvraj finished with 70 off 30 balls, with 5 fours, and as many sixes, helping India post a target of 188, which Australia failed to chase down and got knocked out.
Sharma elaborated, “I still remember when we won against Australia in the semi-final in 2007, our hotel was full of fans and they were all celebrating and dancing, I couldn’t believe my eyes as I hadn’t seen anything like this before. You always see fans in the stadium but that day at the hotel, seeing all of those supporters, I felt that it is the fans’ passion and love that keeps the team going.”
Currently, India is going through a nationwide lockdown. Meanwhile, the number of coronavirus positive patients in India went past 368000 with almost 12300 people losing their lives on Thursday, as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
