Mumbai Indians opener Rohit Sharma once again showed glimpses of his class but failed to convert his start into a big score against Delhi Capitals in their IPL 2026 clash at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. After DC skipper Axar Patel opted to bowl first, the hosts made early inroads. Mukesh Kumar struck in the third over, removing Ryan Rickelton and Tilak Varma to put Mumbai under immediate pressure.

Amid the early setbacks, Rohit and Suryakumar Yadav steadied the innings with a composed partnership. The former MI skipper looked fluent during his stay, mixing timing with controlled aggression as he built a crucial 53-run stand.
However, just as Rohit seemed set for a bigger knock, DC struck back. Axar Patel broke the partnership in the 10th over, dismissing Rohit for 35 off 26 balls. Attempting an attacking shot, Rohit mistimed the ball, and Nitish Rana produced a sharp effort at extra cover, timing his leap perfectly to complete a clean catch. The wicket halted MI’s momentum and brought Sherfane Rutherford to the crease.

Despite the dismissal, Rohit achieved a significant milestone during his innings. With a six off Vipraj Nigam, he registered his 51st six against Delhi Capitals, becoming the Indian batter with the most sixes against a single IPL team. He surpassed MS Dhoni, who had hit 50 sixes against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

The MI opener has also made a strong start to IPL 2026 overall. After scoring a match-winning 78 in the season opener against Kolkata Knight Riders, his 35 against DC took his tally to 113 runs, briefly putting him among the top contenders for the Orange Cap.
With improved fitness and renewed confidence, Rohit Sharma continues to provide stability at the top, even if he narrowly missed out on another big score in this contest.
