Few rivalries in world cricket carry the emotion, drama, and intensity of an India–Pakistan clash. Reflecting on the iconic encounters between the two sides in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, former India captain Rohit Sharma revisited some of the most defining moments from this historic rivalry. Rohit has been closely associated with the India–Pakistan contests in the tournament for nearly two decades.

From being a young member of the squad during the inaugural edition in 2007 to later captaining India in memorable wins against Pakistan in recent tournaments, he has experienced the rivalry from multiple perspectives. Among all those clashes, Rohit believes the 2007 World Cup final remains the most special memory of his career.
Speaking about that historic campaign, Rohit Sharma said the final of the 2007 ICC World Twenty20 stands out above everything else. “That final against Pakistan will always be my favourite. Nothing can beat winning a World Cup, especially against your biggest rivals,” he said.

Interestingly, India and Pakistan met twice in that inaugural edition. Before the high-stakes final, the two teams met in a dramatic group-stage match that ended in a tie and was decided through the tournament’s first-ever bowl-out — a moment that remains etched in T20 World Cup history.
Rohit recalled that both encounters from the 2007 tournament hold a special place in his memory because of the intensity and the unique circumstances surrounding them. Years later, another unforgettable chapter in the rivalry unfolded during the 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground. On that occasion, Rohit had to watch much of the drama from the dressing room after his early dismissal.

India found themselves in deep trouble at 31/4 while chasing 160, and the game seemed to be slipping away quickly. What followed, however, was one of the greatest innings in T20 World Cup history. Virat Kohli produced a masterclass under immense pressure, guiding India to a stunning victory.
Rohit Sharma admitted that watching the match from the sidelines made the situation even more nerve-wracking. “When you’re not in the middle and can’t influence the game, you feel helpless. I was extremely nervous watching it unfold,” he explained.

He also praised Kohli’s remarkable innings, calling it one of the finest moments he has witnessed in international cricket. According to Rohit, the significance of the occasion and the dramatic comeback made it an unforgettable match.
Despite playing more than 160 T20 Internationals for India, Rohit Sharma revealed that the nerves never truly disappear before a game. “I don’t remember a single match where I wasn’t nervous,” he said. “That feeling reminds you how much the game means. As long as I’m playing, that passion and excitement will always remain.”
