Nearly two decades into his international career, India captain Rohit Sharma believes Indian cricket is heading in the right direction and steadily evolving into a dominant force in world cricket. Speaking during the Mumbai Indians’ ESA Day event, Rohit reflected on India’s recent success across formats and age groups, while also praising the fearless mindset shaping the modern generation of cricketers.

Rohit made it clear that his biggest ambition is to see India become the undisputed powerhouse of world cricket. According to the veteran opener, the performances delivered by Indian teams over the last few years across ICC tournaments prove that the country’s cricketing ecosystem is stronger than ever.

“I want India to be the powerhouse of world cricket. That is the bottom line,” Rohit Sharma said. “What we have achieved over the last three years has been incredible to watch. From the 2024 World Cup to the Women’s World Cup, the Under-19 World Cup, the Champions Trophy and another T20 World Cup, Indian cricket has consistently moved forward. Hopefully, this winning momentum continues.”

The Mumbai Indians star also spoke about how dramatically cricket has evolved since he first entered international cricket. Rohit pointed out that scoring patterns in white-ball cricket have completely changed, with batters now approaching the game with far greater freedom and attacking intent.

“When we started playing, scores around 130 or 140 were considered competitive totals. Today, even 200 sometimes doesn’t feel safe enough,” he explained. “That shows how much the game has evolved over the years.”

According to Rohit, the biggest reason behind this transformation is the fearless approach adopted by modern-day players. He praised young cricketers for backing their instincts and embracing pressure situations instead of playing conservatively.

“Players today are much more fearless and open-minded,” he said. “They are willing to take risks and move the game forward rather than holding back. That mindset is fantastic for cricket and for leagues like the IPL. I think the game will continue reaching even greater heights in the coming years.”

The Indian skipper also shared an important message about nurturing young talent. Rohit stressed that children should be encouraged to enjoy the sport naturally instead of being burdened with expectations too early in life. “There are kids from six years old to 18 years old who are learning the game. You should not put too much pressure on them early in their lives,” Rohit Sharma said. “They should enjoy the sport, play with friends and fall in love with cricket naturally. That’s exactly how it started for me.”

Reflecting on his own career journey, Rohit admitted that setbacks and failures shaped him as much as success did. He explained that difficult phases in cricket taught him resilience, patience and self-awareness.

“In sport, there is never a smooth ride,” he stated. “There are highs and lows, and both teach you something important. Every difficult phase in my career helped me understand what I needed to improve.” Rohit also opened up about how captaincy changed his mindset both on and off the field. Leading India and Mumbai Indians, he said, taught him to prioritise the team above individual milestones.

“When you become captain, it’s no longer just about your own performance,” Rohit explained. “Even if you score a hundred, it won’t give you peace if the team loses. Leadership teaches you to think collectively and put the team’s success first.”

Beyond cricket, Rohit added that the sport has also influenced his personal growth and understanding of life, relationships and decision-making.
