India captain Rohit Sharma said that he would not change his intent despite India losing to Sri Lanka by 32 runs on Sunday (August 3) in the second ODI at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo as well. Chasing 241, the Indian Team were cruising after Rohit and Shubman Gill put on 97 runs for the opening wicket off 13.3 overs as well. However, Jeffrey Vandersay broke the partnership after removing Rohit, who holed out to Pathum Nissanka while trying to play switch sweep as well.

Rohit scored his half-century off 29 balls and went on to score 64 runs off 44 balls with five fours and four sixes as well. Gill became Vandersay’s second victim in the 18th over and from there on, India crumbled under pressure and they were bowled out for 208 in 42.2 overs. Rohit also said that regardless of the situation of the match, he would not compromise on his style of batting as well.

“The reason I got 65 runs is because of the way I batted. When I bat like that, there is bound to be risk taking, and I’m not afraid to do that. Whenever you get out, whether you score 100, 50 or zero, you feel disappointed if you don’t get across the line. But that won’t change my intent,” Rohit Sharma said in the post-match presentation ceremony.

He also said that India were not good enough with the bat in the game as well. Earlier, Washington Sundar claimed three wickets and helped India restrict Sri Lanka to 240 for nine. But India could not do well with the bat, courtesy of Vandersay, who finished with figures of 10-0-33-6.

“We didn’t play good cricket, that’s why we lost the game. We do understand the nature of this surface and the nature of how the game is going to go as well. It gets really, really tough in the middle overs. So you have to try and capitalize in the powerplay and get as many runs as possible. That’s what both openers were trying to do. But we were just not good enough today,” Rohit Sharma again added.

The third and final ODI will take place on Wednesday, August 7 in Colombo with a chance for India to draw the series.
