At a recent book launch event for Cheteshwar Pujara’s wife, Indian cricket stalwart Rohit Sharma offered a heartfelt glimpse into his father’s unwavering love for Test cricket. The former Indian Test captain shared a poignant memory that underscored just how differently his father viewed the red-ball format compared to the flashier limited-overs games.

Recounting the aftermath of his record-breaking 264-run ODI knock against Sri Lanka in 2014, Rohit recalled, “I still remember that day. I came home thinking I had done something truly special. But my father was like, ‘Okay, well played. Good job.’ No excitement. No over-the-top reaction. But if I ever got a gritty 30 or 40 in a Test match, he’d talk about it in detail. That’s the kind of love he has for Test cricket.”
Rohit explained how his father, who worked at a transport company, played a crucial role in shaping his cricketing journey. Alongside his mother’s sacrifices, his father’s quiet yet strong presence ensured Rohit had everything he needed to succeed.

So, yes, there was a bit of disappointment when I decided to step away. But he was happy too. Happy that I had a good career and proud of the journey.”
