Former India captain Rohit Sharma marked a memorable milestone in his illustrious career on June 23 by sharing a picture of himself with the prestigious Padma Shri award. The veteran opener received the honour from President Droupadi Murmu during the Padma Awards ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan, adding another significant achievement to an already remarkable cricket journey.

Taking to X after the ceremony, Rohit reflected on the significance of the date, which holds a special place in his career. “23rd June bringing all kinds of magic. Nineteen years ago, it began with an India cap. Today, another proud chapter is added to the story,” Rohit wrote.

The date is particularly meaningful for the Mumbai batter as it was on June 23, 2007, that he made his international debut for India in an ODI against Ireland in Belfast. Nearly two decades later, Rohit remains one of the most accomplished players in Indian cricket history.

Over the course of his international career, Rohit has represented India in 67 Tests, 285 ODIs and 159 T20Is, scoring 4,301, 11,720 and 4,231 runs respectively. He remains India’s highest run-scorer in T20 internationals and sits third on the list of leading ODI run-scorers for the country.

The 39-year-old continues to play a key role in India’s ODI setup. His most recent appearance came against Afghanistan in Chennai on June 20, where he scored a fluent 79 off 69 deliveries. He is expected to return to action during India’s upcoming ODI series against England next month.

Rohit’s legacy extends far beyond his batting numbers. After retiring from T20Is in 2024 and Test cricket in 2025, he left both formats as one of India’s most successful captains. Under his leadership, India won the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2024 and the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025. He had previously been part of India’s T20 World Cup-winning squad in 2007 and Champions Trophy-winning team in 2013 under MS Dhoni.
