In a truly emotional and unforgettable moment at Mumbai’s iconic Wankhede Stadium, Indian ODI captain Rohit Sharma made sure his proudest milestone wasn’t just about him—it was about his roots. As the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) unveiled the newly renamed ‘Rohit Sharma Stand’ in his honour, the Hitman chose to celebrate the occasion by sharing the limelight with the two people who shaped his journey: his parents, Mrs. Purnima Sharma and Mr. Gurunath Sharma.

The event, attended by dignitaries and fans alike, initially appeared to follow a conventional script, with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expected to do the honours alongside Rohit. But in a touching departure from formality, Rohit stepped down from the main stage and invited his parents up to join him.

With the Chief Minister graciously placing Mr. Gurunath’s hand on the inauguration button, the trio pressed it together, drawing warm applause from an emotional crowd and creating a moment that symbolised a lifetime of shared sacrifices and silent support.

The celebration continued grandly. Rohit’s wife, Ritika Sajdeh, stood beside him as fireworks lit up the Mumbai skyline and vibrant smoke cannons added drama to the evening. Towering posters of Rohit adorned the stadium walls, while fans captured the occasion with wide smiles and loud cheers.

This honour came after MCA decided to rename the Divecha Pavilion Level 3 at Wankhede as the ‘Rohit Sharma Stand’, a resolution passed during its 86th Annual General Meeting last month, acknowledging Rohit’s incredible contribution to Indian cricket over the years.

Speaking to the audience, a visibly emotional Rohit Sharma reflected on the journey. “I never dreamt of something like this. As a boy growing up in Mumbai with the hope of playing for India, all I wanted was to do my best for the country. Milestones like these were never in the picture,” he said.

He continued, “To be recognised at this stadium—Wankhede—where my journey began, amongst some of the greats of the game and even global leaders, is surreal. I’m truly honoured and deeply thankful to the MCA, the Apex Council, and everyone involved.” What made the moment even more special was the timing. “To receive this honour while I’m still playing makes it all the more memorable,” Rohit added, noting how emotional it will be when he returns to play for the Mumbai Indians against the Delhi Capitals on May 21.

It wasn’t just a tribute to a cricketer, but a heartfelt celebration of a journey powered by family, resilience, and unwavering dedication.
