Rohit Sharma found himself under the scanner once again as another promising start failed to turn into a substantial score, adding fuel to ongoing debates around India’s ODI batting combinations ahead of future global tournaments. While the chatter on social media has grown louder, the reality remains that expectations around Rohit are sky-high, especially with every innings being closely tracked alongside Virat Kohli’s resurgence in form.

India began their ODI series against New Zealand in commanding fashion in Vadodara, chasing down a competitive 301-run target with authority to take an early lead. Contributions came from all corners, underlining the depth and balance in the Indian lineup. However, as the series moved to Rajkot for the second ODI at the Niranjan Shah Stadium, focus shifted firmly to individual performances, particularly at the top of the order.
With New Zealand opting to bowl first after winning the toss, Rohit Sharma walked out to open alongside newly appointed ODI captain Shubman Gill. The Rajkot surface offered a fair contest between bat and ball, making it an ideal stage for senior players to stamp their authority. Rohit, who had missed out on capitalising in the first ODI, was expected to anchor the innings and build something meaningful.

The Indian skipper endured a cautious start against the new ball, especially against Kyle Jamieson, taking 11 deliveries to open his account. Once settled, Rohit began to find rhythm, striking a few boundaries and showing glimpses of control that suggested a bigger knock was in the making. However, just as he looked set, impatience crept in.
Attempting to take on debutant Kristian Clarke, Rohit advanced down the track but failed to time the cross-seam delivery cleanly. The mistimed shot resulted in a straightforward catch at deep cover, cutting short another start and leaving the opener visibly disappointed.

This dismissal also came at a time when Rohit’s position at the top of the ICC ODI batting rankings had already come under threat. Prior to the Rajkot ODI, he slipped down the standings after Virat Kohli’s match-winning 93 in Vadodara propelled him back to the No.1 spot. New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell, with a composed 84 in the same game, also surged ahead of Rohit.
Currently placed third with 775 rating points, Rohit Sharma missed a crucial opportunity to reclaim lost ground. While criticism continues to surface, his experience and track record ensure that the conversation is far from over as the series progresses.
