Indian cricketers Mohammed Shami and Shreyas Iyer recently shared the moments they played under Rohit Sharma’s leadership and gave an insight into what goes on inside the camp of the Indian cricket team. In an impassioned style of reactions on the field and candid way of communication, Rohit has built a reputation as a leader who grants freedom but has high expectations.

Shami pointed out that while Rohit gives players the liberty to express themselves, some responsibilities come with such freedom. He explained that flare-ups that Rohit displays on the field happen if a player does not stick to a plan or is not executing what is expected of him. That, he said, formed a significant part of Rohit’s leadership.

“Best thing about Rohit Sharma is that he gives you freedom, but if you don’t live up to his expectations, then the reactions which we see on the screen—those we understand without him saying anything—start to come out,” Mohammed Shami said during a Cricket Award show.

Iyer echoed the sentiments of Shami, stating that the team has got used to Rohit’s different style of communication. He described how the team often fills in the gaps with Rohit’s statements, understanding his intent without having to go into long-winded explanations.

“He’s actually right. We fill in the words ‘woh’, ‘yeh’, ‘usko’, ‘isko.’ It’s like fill in the blanks for us. We just visualize what will happen in that particular moment or what he’s talking about in another situation. But we understand his feelings. We’ve been playing with him for so many years. It’s not like he’s trying to beat around the bush; we know exactly what he feels,” Shreyas Iyer explained.

He said, “What you guys see on the field is the real me” to such comments, Rohit Sharma, who was adjudged the Men’s International Cricketer of the Year at the ceremony. “There’s a simple story behind this. I keep telling them to be themselves on the field, but for that, I first have to be myself, and that is how I am, and that is how I want to be on the field as well,” Rohit Sharma said.
