A funny exchange between Indian captain Rohit Sharma and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was caught on the stump mic during Day 2 of the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). The light-hearted chatter has since gone viral, showcasing a humorous moment amid a tense battle. The incident occurred near the end of the first innings when Australia’s last pair of Nathan Lyon and Scott Boland were at the crease, adding crucial runs to Australia’s total.
As the Indian bowlers sought to close the innings, Rohit was heard urging Jadeja to take an aggressive field placement. He jokingly added that if no one managed to take the wickets, he might have to bowl himself.

In the video shared by broadcasters Star Sports, Rohit can be heard saying, “Nahi jaayega yaar… udhar out hojayega. Itna lamba hai udhar yaar. Hume out karne mein dekhna hai usko yaar. Out kaun karega fir, main? Mereko daalna padhega!” which roughly translates to, “It won’t go out, man… the boundary is quite long on that side. We have to look to get him out. Who will get him out then, me? I’ll have to bowl then!”

While this moment brought some comic relief, India faced a difficult challenge in the first innings. Despite Steven Smith’s brilliant 140 off 197 balls, it was the contributions from Pat Cummins (49 off 63), Mitchell Starc (15 off 36), and Lyon (13 off 18) that proved costly for India. The Indian bowling attack struggled to finish off Australia’s tail, and Rohit’s captaincy faced heavy criticism for the lack of effective planning and tactical execution.

Rohit’s personal struggles with the bat continued in the second innings. After promoting himself back to the top of the order, he faced just five balls before being dismissed for 3 runs. Attempting a pull shot against Pat Cummins, Rohit failed to connect properly and was caught at mid-wicket. His dismissal was called “lazy” by former Australian captain Ricky Ponting, who pointed out that Rohit’s usually aggressive and confident batting was missing in this instance.
“It’s not committed, not really looking to be aggressive. If you’re not switched on, they’ll knock you over every time,” Ponting said. Rohit’s poor form continued, with his total for the series now standing at a dismal 22 runs from four innings, averaging just 5.50.
