The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) is all set to honour one of its most cherished sons — Rohit Sharma — by naming a stand after him at the iconic Wankhede Stadium. The official inauguration of the Rohit Sharma Stand will take place on May 13, marking a proud moment for the Indian captain and Mumbai native, just weeks after he turned 38.

The decision was finalised during MCA’s 86th Annual General Meeting held on April 15, where the association unanimously agreed to rename Divecha Pavilion’s Level 3 as the Rohit Sharma Stand. With this gesture, Rohit joins an elite list of Mumbai’s cricketing legends who’ve had similar honours bestowed upon them — names like Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, Vijay Merchant, and Dilip Vengsarkar.
Reacting to the tribute, Rohit Sharma was visibly emotional. Speaking at the inauguration of the third season of the Mumbai T20 League, he said, “To sit back and think that there will be a stadium stand named after me… it’s an unreal feeling. It’s not something I ever imagined growing up, and I will be forever grateful for this incredible honour.”

Rohit Sharma, who recently led India to glory in the 2024 T20 World Cup and 2025 Champions Trophy, admitted that milestones like these weren’t on his radar when he first picked up a bat.

“When you begin your journey in cricket, you don’t think about these things. You just want to play, contribute, and wear the India jersey. But something like this — it’s truly special.”
In addition to honouring Rohit, the MCA has announced two more dedications. The Grand Stand Level 4 will be named after the late Ajit Wadekar, the former India skipper who famously led the side to historic Test series victories in England and the West Indies in 1971.

Meanwhile, the Grand Stand Level 3 will be renamed Pawar Stand in recognition of Sharad Pawar’s pivotal role in Indian cricket administration, including his time as MCA president and BCCI chief. It promises to be a day of nostalgia and celebration at Wankhede — the ground where memories are made and legends are honoured.
