In a bid to enhance their preparations for the T20 World Cup 2024, India engaged in the first T20I of a three-match series against Afghanistan. Making a significant return to the T20I setup after 14 months, Rohit Sharma, leading the side, won the toss and opted to bowl first at the PCA Stadium in Mohali.

Known for his aggressive batting and diverse range of shots, Rohit Sharma added a light-hearted moment during the toss when he momentarily forgot the name of teammate Kuldeep Yadav, who was not part of the playing XI for the first T20I against Afghanistan.

While discussing the team composition with Murali Kartik at the toss, Rohit mentioned the players missing out, including Sanju, Avesh, and Yashasvi, but momentarily struggled to recall the fourth name. Despite Murli Kartik reminding him that Kuldeep Yadav was not playing, Rohit initially insisted that Kuldeep was in the team, only to later acknowledge the oversight with a smile.

While explaining the team combination, Rohit Sharma said to Murali Kartik at the toss, “Yeah look obviously I will tell you the guys who are missing out, the guys who are missing out are Sanju, Avesh, Yashasvi and then….. one more, Avesh, Sanju. I told you (Murli Kartik) before the toss.”

As Rohit Sharma reassumes the captaincy of the Indian T20I side, he aims to lead India to victory in the T20 World Cup 2024, seeking his maiden ICC trophy. The T20I series against Afghanistan serves as the final bilateral series ahead of the upcoming ICC tournament.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, both returning to the Indian T20I side after India’s loss in the T20 World Cup 2022 semi-final, are crucial components in India’s quest for T20 World Cup glory. Rohit Sharma has maintained decent form since the 2023 Asia Cup, while Virat Kohli’s exceptional return to international cricket, highlighted by being the Player of the Tournament in the 2023 ODI World Cup, adds a significant boost to the team.
