Rovman Powell and Jason Holder pulled off a sensational catch to dismiss the explosive Nicholas Pooran during the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2024 clash between the Barbados Royals and Trinbago Knight Riders on September 14. The Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados, witnessed this brilliant piece of fielding as Powell and Holder showcased quick thinking and seamless teamwork near the boundary ropes.
The moment unfolded in the ninth over of Trinbago’s innings as they chased 157. Pooran, known for his aggressive batting, attempted to take on Keshav Maharaj by hitting him down the ground. However, the shot wasn’t well-timed, coming off the toe end of his bat. Powell sprinted across from long-off, leaping to take the catch high above his head.
Realizing he was about to cross the boundary line, Powell quickly tossed the ball back to Holder, who had run in from long-on. Holder, with calm composure, completed the catch, securing a vital wicket for the Royals. It was an exceptional example of fielding awareness and coordination.

Earlier, the Trinbago Knight Riders won the toss and opted to field first. Their decision paid off as Akeal Hosein struck twice in the opening over, setting back the Royals. Quinton de Kock provided a counter-attacking knock, scoring 39 off 21 balls, but the Royals struggled when No. 4 batter Rivaldo Clarke found it tough to rotate the strike, managing just 18 runs off 24 deliveries.

Amidst the chaos, Jason Holder departed for a duck, leaving the Royals teetering at 71/5 in the 11th over. At this precarious stage, Rovman Powell and David Miller stepped up to forge a much-needed partnership. Rovaman Powell led the charge, smashing an unbeaten 59 off 38 balls, with Miller contributing a crucial cameo.
Their efforts propelled the Royals to a defendable total of 156/7 in 20 overs. Waqar Salamkheil was the standout bowler for the Knight Riders, claiming 3/13. In response, Trinbago started poorly, losing openers Sunil Narine and Jason Roy to Maheesh Theekshana within the first three overs.

However, Nicholas Pooran and Shaqkere Parris stitched together a vital 51-run partnership. Despite Keacy Carty’s 32 and a steady cruise at 106/3 in the 14th over, Trinbago stumbled with regular wickets. Nonetheless, Hosein’s quick-fire 20 and Terrance Hinds’ unbeaten 14 guided Trinbago to a thrilling victory, sealing the win with two wickets and a ball to spare.
