Exactly 12 years ago, Rudra Pratap Singh registered his career-best ODI figures of 8.5-2-35-4 against Sri Lanka at Rajkot in only his third match. The performance also earned him his maiden ‘Man of the Match’ award in ODIs.

He achieved the feat during Sri Lanka’s tour of India in 2005. By winning the first four ODIs, India had already sealed the seven-match series. Sri Lanka staged a comeback by winning the fifth ODI by 5 wickets at Ahmedabad.

Virender Sehwag, the then Indian captain, won the toss and chose to field at Rajkot. After losing Sanath Jayasuriya (19) to S. Sreesanth in the eighth over, Sri Lanka kept on losing wickets at regular intervals. They ended up scoring 196-10 in 42.5 overs.

RP Singh was the pick of the Indian bowlers. He dismissed Upul Tharanga (28) and Marvan Atapattu (9) in the 12th and 18th over respectively. His other two wickets came in the form of Farvez Maharoof (4) and Upul Chandana (30) in the 41st and 43rd over respectively. Other than RP Singh, Murali Kartik picked up two and Irfan Pathan and Sreesanth picked up a wicket apiece.
