Catches dropped. Boundaries leaked. Overthrows. Well, it was such a day for New Zealand and Kolkata Knihgt Riders’ Trent Boult. Barring the wickets column, everything ticked for Boult in today’s match.
In what was the last delivery of his spell, Boult bowled a back of a length delivery outside the off stump. Mohit Sharma went for the big shot but could only clear the inner circle. Gautam Gambhir and Umesh Yadav chased the ball to the boundary. The batsmen had run a couple of runs by that time.
Yadav’s throw hit the stumps at the batting end, the flashing bails came into play and the ball richocheted to the short fine leg fielder. Mohit Sharma and Varun Aaron completed a third run in the process. Colin de Grandhomme, who made his IPL debut today, was fielding at short fine leg. It was his turn to hit the stumps now, but at the non-striker’s end. The flashing bails came into play yet again and the batsmen ran another run.
The look on Gambhir’s face summed up not only this situation but Knight Riders’ overall fielding effort for the day. And you got to feel for Trent Boult today. His figures of 4-0-36-0 reveal the consequences of fielders not accepting the catching chances and letting boundaries go easily.
