Rohit Sharma has delivered the strongest possible response to the retirement chatter with a historic century in the third and final ODI between India and England at Lord’s. Although India lost the series 2-1, Rohit’s batting masterclass once again underlined his value to the side and reminded everyone that he remains one of India’s most important players in the 50-over format. Former India wicketkeeper Saba Karim believes Rohit’s latest century should put an end to all speculation about his ODI future.

He feels the conversation around retirement has become unnecessary after the veteran opener produced such a commanding innings under pressure. According to Karim, India should now shift focus away from Rohit’s future and concentrate on fixing their bowling concerns ahead of the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup.

Rohit entered the Lord’s ODI under immense scrutiny after scoring only 11 and 26 in the first two matches of the series. Reports had suggested that the selectors were already looking beyond him and preparing younger options for the next World Cup cycle. But the former India captain responded in trademark fashion, producing one of the finest knocks of his ODI career when his team needed it most.

Chasing a massive target of 388, Rohit smashed 138 off just 110 balls in a brilliant display of timing, intent and authority. In the process, he became the first Indian batter, and also the oldest player, to score an ODI century at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground. Even so, India eventually fell short by 27 runs as England wrapped up the match and the series.

Speaking on JioHotstar’s Match Centre Live, Saba Karim said Rohit’s innings was one of the biggest positives to come out of the England tour. He also praised Shubman Gill for leading from the front and showing positive intent with the bat.

“India have ticked several boxes. Rohit’s century put an end to all the speculation surrounding him. Shubman Gill scored runs, batted with great positivity, and showed impressive leadership. So, I don’t see any major issues with the batting. India’s focus now should be on identifying the right pace bowling attack if Jasprit Bumrah isn’t available,” Saba Karim said.

Karim, however, believes India’s biggest concern lies in the pace attack, especially when Jasprit Bumrah is unavailable. The senior fast bowler missed the final ODI because of an impact injury to his left knee, and England’s batters made full use of his absence.

The former selector feels India’s upcoming five-match ODI series in New Zealand will be crucial in finalising the right balance before the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup. He said the team needs more clarity on its bowling options, especially in unfamiliar conditions where inexperienced pacers can be tested heavily.

Karim also stressed the importance of having a wicket-taking wrist spinner in the middle overs. Whether India continue with Kuldeep Yadav or explore another option, he believes the management must plan more carefully based on opposition, conditions and ground dimensions before locking in the best XI.
