Sachin Tendulkar, often hailed as the “God of Cricket,” might have hung up his boots more than a decade ago, but his sharp eye for the game remains as active as ever. Even 12 years after his international retirement, the Master Blaster continues to follow cricket closely, staying updated with new rules, technological interventions, and India’s performances across formats.

Recently, in an engaging interaction on Reddit, Tendulkar reignited the long-standing debate around the Decision Review System (DRS), stating that the controversial Umpire’s Call should be scrapped entirely. During his official Reddit Q&A, a fan asked Tendulkar which cricket rule he would like to change.

Without hesitation, the 52-year-old legend pointed towards the flaws in the DRS, particularly the inconsistent interpretation of Umpire’s Call. He explained that when players opt for a review, it is because they are dissatisfied with the on-field umpire’s decision, and hence, technology should take full control rather than reverting back to the original call.

“I would change the DRS rule on Umpire’s Call. Players go upstairs because they are unhappy with the on-field decision. Hence, there should be no going back to that call. Just like players, umpires too can have bad patches. Even if technology is slightly inaccurate, it will be consistently inaccurate, which at least makes it fair,” Sachin Tendulkar remarked.

Interestingly, this is not the first time Tendulkar has raised concerns over the Umpire’s Call. Earlier, in a candid discussion with West Indies great Brian Lara, he voiced that LBW decisions should rely entirely on ball-tracking, much like the “in or out” system used in tennis. He strongly believed that in a sport already dominated by batters, bowlers deserve a fairer share, and marginal LBW calls should go in their favour.

“One thing I don’t agree with, with the ICC, is the DRS they’ve used for a long time. The LBW rule requiring more than 50% of the ball hitting the stumps is unnecessary. If technology shows the ball clipping, that should be enough. In tennis, it’s either in or out—why should cricket have a grey area?” Sachin Tendulkar had earlier said in his chat with Lara.

Adding a touch of trivia, Tendulkar himself was the first cricketer to be dismissed by the third umpire back in the early 1990s. Having seen cricket evolve across eras, his strong stance on DRS carries weight, and fans now wonder if the ICC will eventually act on his suggestion to bring more clarity and fairness to umpiring decisions.
