Legendary Indian cricketer, Sachin Tendulkar on Tuesday recommended that helmets are extremely important in cricket by citing the example of Vijay Shankar’s injury during an Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kings XI Punjab. Shankar managed to avoid a massive injury when he copped a blow on the head while trying to take a quick single. He would have been seriously hurt had he not been wearing a helmet while batting.

In his recent tweet, Sachin mentioned as he urged all batsmen to wear a helmet at professional levels. He also urged the International Cricket Council (ICC) to up this issue on priority.

Tendulkar had tweeted: “The game has become faster but is it getting safer? Recently we witnessed an incident which could’ve been nasty. Be it a spinner or pacer, wearing a HELMET should be MANDATORY for batsmen at professional levels. Request @icc to take this up on priority.”

Sachin also tagged Team India head coach Ravi Shastri in another tweet and said, “This also reminded me of the time when you got hit after top-edging a full toss bowled by Mr Gavaskar during an exhibition game. That could’ve been a grave injury too but thankfully wasn’t!”

Safety norms and rules regarding head injuries of any sort were changed after the unfortunate death of the former Australian opener, Phillip Hughes, who suffered a fatal blow on the head while batting in a Sheffield Shield match on November 25, 2014.

Hughes tragically passed away 2 days after suffering the injury on the field in Sydney at the age of 25. The incident brought about sweeping changes in the sport from a new helmet design, with clip-on neck guards on the back, to concussion substitutes in international as well as domestic cricket.
