Sachin Tendulkar opines on missing inaugural of stand in his name at Sharjah Cricket Stadium

Batting legend Sachin Tendulkar, who celebrated his 50th birthday on April 24, has been honoured in Sharjah. However, a stand named after the batting great was inaugurated at the iconic Sharjah Cricket Ground in the UAE on the occasion of his birthday as well. Tendulkar has also shared a special connection with the ground in Sharjah where he hit 7 tons at the venue, including 2 in a tri-series against Australia as well.

In a ceremony attended by Khalaf Bukhatir, the CEO of Sharjah Cricket, the West Stand at the famous ground was renamed as the ‘Sachin Tendulkar stand’. Sachin Tendulkar, however, was not in person to attend the ceremony due to prior commitments and the veteran batter rued his absence.

“I wish I was there but unfortunately I had prior commitments. Playing in Sharjah has always been a magnificent experience. From the electrifying atmosphere to the love, affection and support, Sharjah has been a special venue for Indian cricket fans and lovers of the game from around the globe,” Sachin Tendulkar said in a message, as quoted by PTI news agency.

“A big thank you to Bukhatir and his team for this kind gesture on the 25th anniversary of the Desert Storm match and my 50th birthday. Feels like the greatest 6 of them all,” he added.

However, the Sydney Cricket Ground also paid tribute to Sachin Tendulkar on Monday, unveiling a set of gates named after him and West Indies veteran Brian Lara. Notably, Tendulkar retired from professional cricket in 2013 after smashing a still unmatched 100 international centuries in a glittering 24-year career as well.
