Exactly 19 years ago, master-blaster Sachin Tendulkar, scored his 21st ODI hundred against Zimbabwe in a ‘Man of the Match’ performance at Sharjah. He played the innings during the final of the Coca-Cola Champions Trophy in 1998.
Mohammad Azharuddin, the then Indian captain, had won the toss and chose to field. Zimbabwe failed to get off to a solid start as they lost wickets at regular intervals. The Indian bowlers maintained the tempo throughout the innings. As a result of which, Zimbabwe scored 196-9 in 50 overs.
Paul Strang, who scored 46 (91) with the help of three fours, was the highest run-scorer for the batting side. For India, Javagal Srinath (10-1-40-3) was the pick of the bowlers.
Sourav Ganguly and Tendulkar walked out to open the batting for India. While the southpaw was watchful from one end, Tendulkar appeared in no mood to relax. He started playing his shots from the word go to an extent that India won the match with 20 overs to go with 10 wickets in hand.
Tendulkar ended up scoring 124* (92) with the help of 12 fours and six sixes. On the other hand, Ganguly scored 63* (90) with the help of four fours and three sixes.
