Former India opener Sadagoppan Ramesh has criticised the team management for overloading the batting order with left-handers in an era where matchups play a major role in T20 cricket. His comments came after India’s poor showing in the fourth T20I against England in Bristol, where the visitors once again struggled to build momentum and finished with a modest 158/7 in 20 overs.

England made the target look far too easy, chasing it down in just 13.5 overs with nine wickets in hand. The defeat was India’s fifth straight loss in completed T20Is and their third setback in the ongoing five-match series, leaving them 0-3 down with only one match remaining.
Ramesh, speaking on his YouTube channel, said India’s selection strategy has made life easier for opposition bowlers, particularly England off-spinner Will Jacks. He pointed out that too many left-handers in the top order have allowed bowlers to settle into a predictable rhythm, making tactical matchups far less favourable for India.

“Indian batters have played Will Jacks like Muralitharan because everyone coming in is a left-hander. So right-hand batters must be given weightage in selection in modern day cricket,” Sadgoppan Ramesh said.
He added that elite players such as Shane Warne, Muttiah Muralitharan, Brian Lara, Chris Gayle and Sachin Tendulkar were often able to overcome matchups through exceptional quality. In India’s current lineup, however, Sadgoppan Ramesh feels that kind of individual brilliance is missing, which makes the left-handed-heavy combination easier to exploit.

“With so many left-handers, even Will Jacks turned into a villain for India. In England conditions, he has conceded only 85 runs off 11 overs,” he noted.
India’s selection pattern also came under further scrutiny because Will Jacks enjoyed success in the fourth T20I, finishing with tidy figures of 1/28 in four overs. Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer stood out as the lone India batter to cross 25, scoring a fluent unbeaten 80 off 49 balls, highlighting the lack of support around him.

Sadgoppan Ramesh questioned how the team management could ignore modern matchup-based cricket strategy, especially after recent failures. He argued that India’s squad balance, both at the selection stage and in the playing XI, needs a serious rethink. With England sealing the series, India have now suffered back-to-back T20I series defeats for the first time since early 2019, adding to the pressure on the team management and selection committee.
