Former India opener Sadagoppan Ramesh has advised Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to think twice before appointing Eoin Morgan as their next head coach, particularly if the reported ₹18-20 crore fee is accurate. Ramesh believes spending such a huge amount on a coach without head-coaching experience would not represent good value for the IPL franchise. CSK are searching for a new head coach after ending their long-standing association with Stephen Fleming.

Fleming had been with the franchise for 18 years before parting ways, while England subsequently appointed him as their Test head coach following Brendon McCullum’s removal. Recent reports have suggested that former England captain Morgan is among the names being considered by CSK. However, Ramesh questioned the financial logic behind such a move and argued that even elite players are carefully evaluated before receiving such a substantial investment.

“If these reports are true, it’s not worth it for CSK to go for him. Even for an upper-tier player, you think twice before signing him for that amount.” Sadgoppan Ramesh further suggested that franchises should not spend ₹18-20 crore on a coach when even established players with long-term potential are not always valued at such figures.

“When that’s the case, it’s a waste to pay a coach 18 to 20 crores.” The former opener also claimed that Morgan would not command a similar amount for a coaching role in England, suggesting that some overseas coaches may see the IPL as an opportunity to maximise their earnings.

Morgan brings considerable leadership credentials to the table, having captained England to their historic 2019 ODI World Cup triumph. He also led Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL during the 2020 and 2021 seasons. In 24 matches as KKR captain, Morgan recorded 11 victories and 12 defeats and guided the franchise to the IPL 2021 final. However, Morgan has yet to gain experience as a head coach at either international or franchise level.

Instead of Morgan, Sadgoppan Ramesh believes CSK should consider Michael Hussey if they want an overseas coach. Hussey has served as CSK’s batting coach since 2018 and already understands the franchise’s culture and working environment. “Even if CSK want a foreign head coach, there is Michael Hussey. He was an exceptional cricketer.”

Ramesh urged CSK to give Hussey complete authority and assess how he performs in the role.  Hussey also enjoyed a successful playing career with CSK, representing the franchise from 2008 to 2013 and again in 2015. He scored 1,768 runs for the team at an average above 42 and a strike rate of 123.63. The Australian was part of CSK’s title-winning campaigns in 2010 and 2011. With CSK missing the playoffs for a third consecutive season in 2026, the franchise will be hoping for a major turnaround in IPL 2027.
