Darren Sammy Roped In To Promote Women’s World T20 2018

Former West Indies skipper Darren Sammy has been roped in to promote the upcoming edition of the ICC Women’s World T20 2018 that starts in November. West Indies will host the much-awaited event from November 9-24 with Guyana, St Lucia, and Antigua are the venues where the matches will be taking place.

Sammy will be seen promoting the ICC tournament after joining the Windies Ambassador Programme. Cricket West Indies’ has begun the initiative to involve current and former cricket stars in the promotion of its cricket-related activities.

Talking about the same, Sammy said, “It is an honor and a huge pleasure to join the team for the ICC Women’s World T20. This is going to be a great event for our region and for our women, who have for generations helped to build our communities … in St Lucia and across the West Indies. In doing so, they have made an outstanding contribution to our cricket.”

Sammy also reckons that the tournament will give a boost to women’s cricket in West Indies. He explained, “This tournament will also go a long way to boost women’s cricket. The sport is on the rise and we want to see it grow even more when the tournament comes to our doorsteps. As a proud son of the soil, I just want to play my part in this wonderful campaign called #WatchThis as we prepare to host the cricketing world. I am urging everyone to come on board and join us for 23 exciting matches at these three amazing venues.”

The flamboyant all-rounder is himself a two-time World T20 winning skipper as he led West Indies to two titles in 2012 [in Sri Lanka] and 2016 [in India]. The West Indies women cricket team are the defending champions and have been placed in Group A with England, South Africa, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Group B comprises India, Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan and Ireland.
