The long-running debate around MS Dhoni and the later years of Yuvraj Singh’s international career has resurfaced once again, largely due to repeated comments from Yuvraj’s father, Yograj Singh. For years, Yograj has openly accused Dhoni of playing a role in cutting short his son’s time with Team India. However, former chief selector Sandeep Patil has now stepped forward to strongly reject that narrative. Speaking on The Vicky Lalwani Show on YouTube, Patil addressed the allegations directly and offered a clear account of what actually happened behind the scenes during selection meetings.

According to him, MS Dhoni never once suggested that Yuvraj Singh should be dropped from the Indian team. Patil was firm in his response as he reflected on his tenure as chairman of the selection committee. He explained that throughout the discussions — whether during official meetings, tours, or even in the middle of tournaments — Dhoni never interfered with the selectors’ decisions regarding Yuvraj.

“Not once, not during selection meetings, not on tour, not during matches, did Mahendra Singh Dhoni say drop Yuvraj Singh. I am going on the record,” Sandeep Patil stated. He further emphasised that Dhoni always respected the independence of the selection committee. According to Patil, the former India captain maintained complete faith in the selectors and never attempted to influence their calls. “He had total confidence in the selection committee. He didn’t say anything,” Patil added, putting the long-standing controversy into perspective.

At the same time, Patil acknowledged the emotional angle behind Yograj Singh’s criticism. As a father, Yograj’s strong feelings about his son’s career are understandable. However, Patil believes the blame has been misplaced over the years.

“A father feeling strongly about his son is not wrong. But the blame is being placed in the wrong place,” he explained. Despite these clarifications, Yograj Singh has remained vocal about his views. In a recent interview on the Switch YouTube channel, he reiterated his disappointment and said he still holds Dhoni responsible for the way Yuvraj’s career unfolded. “I won’t forgive MS Dhoni. He should look at himself in the mirror,” Yograj Singh said, while also acknowledging Dhoni’s stature in Indian cricket.

There is no denying that Yuvraj Singh remains one of India’s greatest match-winners. The flamboyant all-rounder played a pivotal role in India’s triumphs at the 2007 ICC World Twenty20 and the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup, where he was named Player of the Tournament. His heroic performances came while he was secretly battling cancer, a fight he later overcame before making an inspiring comeback.

While Yograj’s disappointment continues to echo in public discussions, Sandeep Patil’s account offers a different perspective — one that firmly states the selectors, not Dhoni, made the final decisions about team selection.
