Former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar has showered rich praise on current World No.1 T20I batter Abhishek Sharma, underlining how the young opener perfectly embodies India’s modern-day approach to T20 cricket. Speaking as a JioStar expert, Bangar highlighted Abhishek’s fearless mindset and attacking intent as the blueprint for how this Indian side wants to dominate the shortest format.

“Abhishek Sharma defines the way this Indian team wants to play in the T20 format. A fearless and aggressive brand of cricket is only possible with a player like Abhishek Sharma,” Sanjay Bangar said, underlining the trust the team management has placed in the 25-year-old.
Former India all-rounder Suresh Raina also weighed in, pointing out that Abhishek’s wide shot-making range makes him a standout performer in India’s batting line-up. According to Raina, it’s not just brute power but refined technique that separates Abhishek from his peers.

“His bat swing, the way he hits sixes off spinners without leaving his crease, his cover drives, and the authority with which he hits full balls are exceptional. He uses his feet brilliantly and is very strong straight down the ground,” Suresh Raina noted.
Adding further perspective, former Test specialist Cheteshwar Pujara highlighted Abhishek’s versatility, especially his comfort on the off side — a trait not always common among aggressive openers.
“He’s a really versatile batter. Traditionally, many top-order players rely heavily on leg-side scoring, but Abhishek is equally strong on the off side. From ball one, he shows intent, picks length early, and has a vast range of scoring options,” Cheteshwar Pujara explained.

Abhishek Sharma made his T20I debut against Zimbabwe in July 2024 and has since enjoyed a remarkable rise. In just 33 T20I matches, the left-hander has piled up 1,115 runs at a staggering strike rate of 188.02, including two centuries and six half-centuries. His fearless approach at the top has provided India with rapid starts and a clear attacking identity.
Meanwhile, India have suffered a setback ahead of the upcoming five-match T20I series against New Zealand, starting January 21. All-rounder Washington Sundar has been ruled out after sustaining a side strain. The BCCI confirmed the development on January 16, stating that Sundar felt discomfort in his lower rib area while bowling in the first ODI at Vadodara.

Following scans and expert consultation, he has been advised rest before reporting to the BCCI Centre of Excellence for further rehabilitation. The Men’s Selection Committee has named leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi as Sundar’s replacement for the T20I series. Additionally, Shreyas Iyer has been added to the squad for the first three matches, replacing the injured Tilak Varma, as India reshuffles their resources ahead of a crucial bilateral series.
