Former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar believes Rohit Sharma is on a mission to silence critics by proving his fitness and form in the upcoming ODI series against Australia. The Indian opener has been away from international cricket since the 2025 Champions Trophy, and his return is being closely watched by fans and selectors alike.

Bangar drew a parallel between Rohit’s current mindset and his determined comeback after missing the 2011 World Cup squad. That snub, according to Bangar, left a deep mark on the Mumbai batter and fueled a transformation in his approach to fitness and consistency.
“The last time Rohit Sharma followed such a strict routine was after missing the 2011 World Cup. That exclusion hurt him deeply, and I think we’re seeing a similar level of determination now. Even after a decorated career between 2012 and 2024, the criticism about his fitness has clearly motivated him to push harder,” Sanjay Bangar told JioStar.

He further emphasised that Rohit’s renewed hunger is evident not only in his training but also in his on-field readiness.

“It’s great to see Rohit hungry and fit again. Captains don’t always field inside the 30-yard circle — sometimes they have to dive and patrol the outfield too. Rohit looks completely prepared for that challenge, which is a very positive sign,” Sanjay Bangar added.

The eight-match white-ball series between India and Australia, starting October 19, will be crucial for Rohit as he looks to regain top form and reaffirm his fitness ahead of the 2025 season. Interestingly, the series also marks his first appearance since being replaced by Shubman Gill as India’s ODI captain, a change announced by Ajit Agarkar during the squad selection. All eyes will now be on Rohit to see if this renewed focus brings out his vintage best.
