Former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar has heaped praise on young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, drawing comparisons between his technique, temperament, and hunger for big scores to that of cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar. Jaiswal, currently ranked fourth in the ICC men’s Test batter rankings, has already accumulated over 1500 runs in just 16 matches, with four centuries and eight fifties to his name.

His match-winning 161 in the second innings of the first Test in Perth during the ongoing 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy further solidified his reputation. On Star Sports, Bangar highlighted two key aspects that set Jaiswal apart: his solid technique and impressive temperament.

“He is extremely sound technically, which provides a great foundation for him to succeed. Then there’s the temperament, which he’s had since the early days of his career. He has faced many ups and downs in his personal life, but cricket means everything to him,” Sanjay Bangar explained. “His hunger for big scores defines him. Most of his hundreds in Test cricket have been over 150, which shows the kind of drive you want to see in young players.”

Yashasvi Jaiswal, who represents Mumbai in domestic cricket but hails from Uttar Pradesh, moved to Mumbai as a 10-year-old and faced tough circumstances. He relied solely on his cricketing skills to fund his basic needs, showcasing immense determination to make it big.
However, Jaiswal’s journey has not been without challenges. In the ongoing series, he has faced some issues against the swinging ball, with Australian pacers exploiting his weaknesses by getting him to play loose drives outside the off-stump or by cramping him for room.

Despite this, his future looks bright, and India will be hoping he addresses these issues in Brisbane. On the rain-affected opening day of the Test, Australia finished the day at 28/0, with Usman Khawaja and Nathan McSweeney holding firm against the Indian bowlers.
