Virat Kohli’s resurgence in form during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 didn’t happen by chance—it was the result of calculated adjustments in both technique and mindset. Former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar, who was seen working with Kohli after his return from Australia, shed light on the changes that helped the Indian superstar rediscover his best touch.

Following a challenging Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where he managed only one century in Perth before struggling in the remaining games, Kohli faced further setbacks in domestic cricket and the home ODI series against England. However, his turnaround in the UAE was remarkable, headlined by an unbeaten century against Pakistan, where he barely gave the opposition any chances.

Bangar highlighted that Kohli made a conscious effort to wait for the ball rather than committing too early. “He wasn’t always on the front foot but was willing to cover the infield. Against spin, he played more off the back foot early in his innings, which helped him settle before transitioning to a more attacking approach,” Bangar explained on Star Sports.

A crucial technical adjustment involved Virat Kohli’s bat swing after the Australia series.

“When he’s in form, his bat comes from the second or third slip area, allowing for controlled shots. He realized after the Australia tour that he needed to refine this. Kohli is someone who leaves no stone unturned in his preparation, and his intensity in training translated onto the field,” Sanjay Bangar added.

Another key factor was his laser-sharp focus. “What he did well was watching the ball till the very end, ensuring precise contact. We spoke about watching the ball like a hawk and giving 100% to every delivery. His hunger for runs remains unmatched, and based on his innings against Pakistan, he has another 3-4 years of international cricket left in him,” Bangar concluded.

With India sealing a semi-final spot after a six-wicket win over Pakistan, they now face New Zealand in their final league match, which will determine the Group A leader.
